September 30th is a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation meant to commemorate the history and legacy of Residential Schools in Canada On Thursday, September 26th, students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt or something else with orange to recognize Orange Shirt Day and the National Truth and Reconciliation Day.

Students will be engaging in learning next week to honor this important day. Through read  alouds and activities, students will focus on understanding what they each need to feel safe and cared for at school and to consider this question: “What action can each member of our school community do to make sure every student feels safe and cared for at school, everyday?” This week is an opportunity for Northern Lights students and staff to come together in the spirit of reconciliation to show their support of a safe, respectful and caring school community.

Make sure you read our blog posts next week to learn more about the activities and learning students are doing in our classroom.

Some highlights from the week!

We have been solidifying our understanding of place value by representing numbers in different ways.  Students are working on reading and writing numbers up to ten million, expressing numbers in expanded form, building with place value blocks + more!

We have been learning about the medicine wheel.  Students came up with many ways to show that we can live in a good way and what that could look like in our lives.

For Thoughtful Tuesday, we worked together as a team to "build each other up" and wrote positive messages to each other.

Grade 5 went on a community walk to Coventry Hills School.  We looked for landmarks and used our mapping skills to create a map of our community.

Thursday was a beautiful day for the Terry Fox Run! Thank you to everyone who gave their best effort, encouraged others, and contributed donations to this important cause. We will continue accepting "Toonies for Terry" donations through next week.

We had our first buddy class today!  The grade 5 students taught the grade 2 students how to log onto their computers and then read together.
