Week of December 9

Hello 5D Families,

The weather continues to be unpredictable for tomorrow, so we are postponing our walk until Friday, December 20.

Thanks,

The Grade 5 Team

Winter Walk

We will be walking to the Storm Pond on Thursday, December 19. This will be to further our understanding of the winter solstice, observe changes in nature through the seasons, and join together as a large grade five community. We will be walking to the storm pond (please see the attached map) after lunch for about an hour to hour and a half to visit the same area we were at during fall equinox.  We will also drop off some student-made holiday cards at the nearby seniors' residence. Please send your student dressed for the weather!

 IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES

December 17 – SPIRIT DAY: Festive Sweater Day

December 18 – School Council Meeting at 6:00 – Please come to have your voice heard on where ~$20000 of Casino Fundraiser money will be spent. The teachers in grades two and three will also be presenting.

December 20 – SPIRIT DAY: PJ + Movie Day

December 20 – Last day of classes before Winter Break

This week we worked on adding and subtracting decimal numbers and finding reasonable estimates. We got to complete a scavenger hunt with the other grade 5 students. Math problems were hidden around the room.

We are moving on to multiplying and dividing larger numbers.  Please work basic facts practice into your daily routine.

Mrs. Brinson read us The Wishing Tree.  We made wishes for other individuals, community members, and the world.

We continue to work on our weather and climate vlogs.

In literacy and social, we researched and wrote summaries about the Atlantic/Appalachian region and the Canadian Shield.

Music Class found the rhythms of the Nutcracker.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Dance Kreations performance.  We had a lot of fun rehearsing and performing "Lip Gloss".  It meant a lot to see friendly encouraging faces in the audience.

Students were excited to have Freedom Frenzie in the gym on Friday.

We built weight-bearing structures with our grade 2 buddies in Maker Space.  Some of the materials were more successful than others.  Students had the opportunity to experiment with 3-4 different types of building materials.
