Week of December 16 + Science Fair

Happy Holidays!!!

We had a very busy and fun-filled week!

We wrapped up our unit in adding and subtracting decimals in math.

We learned about instruments to measure the weather by making anemometers.

We wrapped up our Regions of Canada paragraphs, too!

We played some festive games in PE, and we celebrated our read aloud by watching Out Of My Mind with all the grade 5 classes.

Friday, we walked to our sit-spots at the storm pond to do some seasonal sketching, and then we went to the Seniors' home to deliver cards. We got to stay and sing a couple songs as well.

Last but not least, we helped our grade two buddies make bird feeders.

See everyone back here on Jan. 6 :)

Science Fair 2025

Hello Grade 5!
We are hosting a Science Fair at NLS this year at the beginning of March.  Students who are interested in participating will be thinking of an idea over the Winter Break.  The Science Fair projects will primarily be completed at home, however there will be a weekly lunch club when students can come in to ask their questions and work.  All trifolds and supplies need to be sourced by students.  We will be teaching the students the Scientific Method and their research projects or experiments should follow the steps.
At the NLS Science Fair, students who wish, will have the opportunity to present their projects to two different judges.  The judges are unbiased volunteers who are not members of the NLS staff or community.  Three selected projects will have the opportunity to present at the Calgary Youth Science Fair at the Olympic Oval.
If the project is one of the three selected, the students will go to the Olympic Oval on Thursday, April 10, after school to set up. On Friday, April 11, the three groups will go down to the Olympic Oval for the day. This is not a field trip, so students must find their own way there. It is closed to the public on Friday, so only students and supervisors will be in the area. Before noon, students can be asked to present to judges 2-5 times. In the afternoon, additional judging determines who should move forward for awards. Saturday is the awards ceremony, and the projects are open to the public. Participants do not need to attend on Saturday.
