Message from Restart:
Emotions play a significant part in our lives and can impact our relationships, behaviors and decisions daily. Today in RESTART we discussed Emotional Awareness, including the physiological impact certain emotions have on our bodies and how emotions can impact our behavior. We discussed how emotions and vulnerability affect our wellbeing, in both positive and negative ways, and how to find healthy ways to cope with our sometimes, overwhelming emotions. The phrases “I’m fine” and “its ok to not be ok” were openly discussed to introduce the idea of vulnerability to students. We explored what vulnerability and empathy are and the benefits they can have on our well-being and relationships
We also introduced the feelings wheel and discussed the benefits of using descriptive words to describe our emotions including allowing others to understand how they can support. Many youth experience high levels of stress, and it is normal for some people to develop unhealthy coping skills because of it. Teaching youth positive ways to deal with feelings of being overwhelmed will give them the skills necessary to cope with stressful situations in their lives.
The younger students learn healthy coping skills the less likely they will be to adopt negative stress reduction practices as they get older.
