100th Day of School! 


Tuesday, February 18 will be our 100th day of school at NLS! This is a day where some students will come dressed for “How will you look when you are 100?” 

We are asking grade 5 students to gather information over the long weekend, by reaching out to their elders (grandparents, great aunts/uncles, neighbours, family friends), and asking them for guidance or advice for living their best or longest life.

Science Fair


The Northern Lights Science Fair will be at 1:10 on March 18. All students will participate in the Northern Lights Science Fair who wish. 


Some students wish to participate in the competitive portion of the Science Fair. Science Fair projects will be judged by at least two judges who are not current NLS staff. The top 3 projects will be selected to go to the CYSF (Calgary Youth Science Fair) at the Olympic Oval.  Here is the rubric that the students will be judged on if they want to be considered for the Calgary Wide Science Fair.


If the project is one of the three winning projects, the students will go to the Olympic Oval on Thursday, April 10, after school to set up. On Friday, April 11, the three groups will go down to the Olympic Oval for the day. This is not a field trip, so students must find their own way there. It is closed to the public on Friday, so only students and supervisors will be in the area. Before noon, students can get judged 2-5 times. In the afternoon, additional judging determines who should move forward for awards. Saturday is the awards ceremony, and the projects are open to the public. Participants do not need to attend.

The  Fair follows the guidelines of the Calgary Youth Science Fair.  Here is a page that has tips and tricks.    


The last thing I should mention is the online platform. It must be done by March 21 if students are accepted into CYSF. Students can copy paste the information they typed up for their trifold to this online program. It is used by judges if there is a discrepancy between which project should move forward into the winning round as projects will be competing against one another, which different people have judged.

Trifolds are scarce at this time of year.  Students have made cardboard trifolds in the past or purchased them from Walmart.

In math this week, we completed our Show What You Know assessment. Expect to receive the sheets next week. Students should continue to practice their basic facts and estimation skills.


We worked on the games for our Math Fair.  Students had a trial run on Wednesday to prepare for our Tuesday afternoon buddy class.


































Students wrote messages of kindness to each other and delivered them at the end of the day, on Wednesday.

 Friday, August 30 We had an awesome first week of school, the time went by fast!  Some highlights from the past two days were: Time capsules: We have been writing a letter to our future selves to read at the end of grade 5 and grade 12.  Students have been including details about their summer, their interests and goals for this year. Shipwrecked: To build leadership and resiliency, we played a game called Shipwrecked.  Students in 5D worked as a team to cross from one side of the soccer field to the other by only standing on 10 sit upons.  The students moved almost halfway across the field without touching the grass!  It was amazing to hear all of the words of encouragement and strategy. Math and Literacy: We eased back into learning by playing math and literacy games.
