This Week:

We will be hosting a "Carnival" for our grade 2 buddy class. Over the last month we have been asking open and closed questions and collecting data. We will collect data from our carnival games and learn how to present our data on paper and on the computer. The students were given the guidelines that the game needs to be:

- Easy

- Quick set-up and take down

- Materials need to be re-used or made of recycled material

We will have planning time in class on Monday and Tuesday. Students are not expected to bring any materials from home. Examples of games are, "How many seconds can you keep a balloon in the air?" or "How many dominoes can you stack in a tower in a minute without it collapsing?"

Valentines Day

We will be recognizing Valentine's Day on Wednesday, February 12 with messages of gratitude and kindness. If your child would like to bring a message of kindness to other students on February 12, we ask that you respect the following expectations:

- Each child in the class should receive a message if your child would like to send something.  (There is no expectation that your child will send a message, but we request that if your child does bring a note or Valentine that no student in their class is left out.)

-What is written is kind

For safety reasons, no candy, chocolate or other food items can be handed out. (If your child brings any candy, chocolate or food items, they will be sent back home with them.) Thank you in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

If grade 5 students access their Google Classroom, they can see all of their classmates names under the tab, "people" for correct spelling of names.

Here is a list, just in case.

Restart

Health: We learned about consent and boundaries with the Restart Program.

We learned that boundaries are different for EVERYONE and they can change day-to-day, time-to-time. We practiced how to say NO to peer pressure through a fun game of Jenga!

Please see the letter at the bottom of the page for more detailed information.

We received letters from our Grade 6 Pen Pals.  We planned our letters this week and will send our good copies next week.

In math we have been reviewing multiplication and long division to get ready for our Show What You Know on Tuesday.  We played Jeopardy as a review.  Click on this link if you would like to review at home.  Multiplication and Division Jeopardy

In Science we continued to solidify out understanding of the reasons for the seasons and the moon cycle.

In literacy, we continue to work on our "Barnabus Project" stories. Students practced how to "show not tell" events in a story. We worked on describing the character's 5 senses to help engage their reader.

Coding
We familiarized ourselves with Ozo Bots and line coding. 5D learned the different parts of the Ozo Bots and how to line code. We then taught our grade 2 buddies today! Some of the class favourite codes were "zigzag", "nitro boost" and "tornado".

Finally, it was amazing to be outside again to play in the snow!

Restart Letter

This week we discussed Healthy Relationships. The purpose for this group in RESTART is for the youth to identify the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships so that they are able develop skills for effective social interaction and be able to resolve conflicts especially with those close personal relationships. We brainstormed different types of relationships they have with people, then, described the sum of characteristics that make up a healthy relationship, more so how to identify signs of a healthy vs unhealthy relationship in our own lives, and how we can navigate these relationships, so they don’t impact our own mental health and wellbeing.

We also discussed consent, ambiguous consent, and what withdrawing consent means and looks like. We also talked about creating boundaries in relationships and how to be assertive when being pressured into doing something we may not agree with or be comfortable doing. Students learned how to be open in communicating and how we can continue to recognize and utilize appropriate times to express our feelings, opinions and thoughts with others in the most productive way.
